Should a mid-market marketing team choose HubSpot or Marketo?

Chris Bryant, Founder

Updated Nov 2026

Choose HubSpot when marketing and sales should share one CRM and your admin capacity is thin. Choose Marketo when your CRM lives in another system, often Salesforce, and you have staff to run the sync between them. Then score both platforms against your CRM plan and the admin hours your team can spare.

Your Marketo renewal is on the calendar, and leadership wants to know whether marketing stays on it or moves into HubSpot. The answer sets where your contact data lives and who maintains the connections around it.

Who faces the HubSpot vs Marketo decision

The decision usually lands on the ops or RevOps leader. That person runs the platform each day and answers for the pipeline numbers it reports. Three setups bring the question up most often:

  • Marketo connected to Salesforce, with sales staying on Salesforce.
  • Marketo connected to Salesforce, with a plan to move sales into HubSpot too.
  • Sales or service already on HubSpot, with marketing still in Marketo.

Each setup leads to a different answer, because the deciding factor is where your CRM lives after the move. A team that keeps Salesforce weighs a marketing swap alone. A team that moves sales as well weighs a full consolidation onto one CRM.

Criteria for a mid-market marketing team

Score both platforms on the rows below. Each row ties to work your team carries after launch, from sync upkeep to monthly reporting. The Marketo column draws on HubSpot’s comparison page.

Criterion HubSpot Marketo
Where the CRM lives Marketing built on HubSpot Smart CRM No CRM, per HubSpot’s page
Sales and marketing data One database Separate systems joined by a sync
Salesforce sync Bi-directional on Professional and Enterprise Bi-directional, per HubSpot’s page
Campaign reporting Custom reports and multi-touch attribution Add-ons often required, per HubSpot
Platforms to maintain One Marketo, the CRM and the sync
Enterprise controls Business units, sandboxes, approvals Not covered by our sources
Native channels Social, ads, websites, shared inbox Not native, per HubSpot

How HubSpot measures against the criteria

CRM and data

HubSpot builds Marketing Studio on its Smart CRM, so campaigns and customer data sit in the same place. Marketing and sales then work from the same contact and deal records. The Analyze tab shows spend, influenced pipeline and closed revenue for each campaign.

Your data model can stretch to fit the business. HubSpot supports custom objects, properties and associations, so records specific to your business can sit beside contacts and deals.

Reporting

HubSpot’s page lists custom reports, interactive dashboards, analytics on the customer journey and multi-touch attribution of revenue. Those tools read the records that sales updates, so a campaign report can run through to closed revenue. On Levrx’s HubSpot portal, campaign results show within 24 hours of a send, down from waits of 2 to 4 weeks for reporting.

Salesforce and other systems

HubSpot’s Professional and Enterprise editions sync both ways with Salesforce and support syncing of selected records. That option lets you move marketing first and leave sales on Salesforce. Our guide to how the Salesforce and HubSpot integration syncs your data walks through that sync in detail. HubSpot also lists a marketplace of 2,000+ apps for the rest of your stack.

Scale and admin load

For larger organizations, HubSpot lists these controls:

  • Business units and multi-brand management
  • Sandboxes for testing
  • Approval workflows for content
  • Advanced permissions
  • Custom-coded templates

In a HubSpot survey of 1,546 CRM users from August 2025, 91% said HubSpot took one month or less to learn. The respondents are HubSpot users, so read it as a vendor figure. Some features sit behind higher tiers. Automated emails in workflows require Professional or Enterprise.

How Marketo measures against the criteria

This guide’s Marketo entries rest on HubSpot’s comparison page, a vendor page dated April 2026. Check Adobe’s own Marketo documentation before you score that column.

A separate system from the CRM

HubSpot’s page states that Marketo isn’t a CRM, so marketing and sales data sit in separate systems. A Marketo team pairs it with a CRM, such as Salesforce, and a sync carries records between the two. Every field both systems write to needs an owner and a rule for which value wins.

That sync is ongoing work. Someone maps new fields, watches for records that fail to sync and settles conflicts when both systems change the same value. A team that staffs a Marketo admin absorbs that work. A team where one person covers ops and campaigns feels it every week.

Reporting and add-ons

HubSpot’s page says Marketo often requires add-ons for advanced reporting. It also lists Marketo add-ons for customer support and training. The page gives no Marketo prices, so price those add-ons with Adobe before you compare totals.

Where Marketo still fits

Take an imagined case. Suppose your sales team lives in Salesforce, your Marketo instance holds years of nurture programs, and nobody plans to move sales. Staying on Marketo keeps that build intact, and the sync you already run keeps working. The CRM argument for HubSpot loses most of its weight when sales stays put.

What moving from Marketo to HubSpot involves

HubSpot Smart Transfer lists Marketo as a supported app. Its supported apps article maps these Marketo data types:

Marketo data How it moves What to check
Contacts Data sync to HubSpot contacts Field mappings in the audit
Email templates HTML recreated in HubSpot with AI Review and test before sending
Users Data sync to HubSpot users Match against your team list
Lists One-time post-sync transfer No updates after transfer

The data sync keeps running in the background after the first pass, so transferred contacts stay current while Marketo is still live. Lists move once and stop updating. The article lists no mapping for Marketo automation, so plan to rebuild your nurture logic in HubSpot workflows.

Smart Transfer carries these rules:

  • The transfer runs one way, from Marketo into HubSpot.
  • Only Super Admins can open Smart Transfer.
  • Custom field mappings require a Data Hub subscription.
  • Custom objects fall outside what Smart Transfer moves.
  • The audit step reports record counts and field support before anything moves.
  • A transfer can be reverted.

How we run the move

Our CRM data migration work covers Pardot, Salesforce, Zoho and other systems. We work from an export, which leaves your existing platforms live while we build. Each migration runs in 5 steps:

  1. Audit the current system and its data.
  2. Design the HubSpot data model.
  3. Clean the data.
  4. Migrate in controlled batches.
  5. Validate against the source data, then hand off.

Before records move, we remove duplicates, standardize field values and archive data that should stay behind. Where custom objects exist in your current setup, we map them to HubSpot equivalents and keep their relationships. That work covers the gap Smart Transfer leaves on custom objects. A CRM data migration typically takes 6 to 12 weeks. We recommend keeping the old system accessible for at least 30 days after go-live.

When sales moves too, the project becomes a full HubSpot implementation. Most implementations run 6 to 12 weeks, and each one ends with documentation of what we built and why.

Conditions that tip the choice

These conditions point toward HubSpot:

  • Sales or service already runs in HubSpot, or will within the year.
  • No one on the team can own a second platform and its sync.
  • You want revenue reporting by campaign without buying a reporting add-on.
  • You want social, ads and your website managed beside email.

These conditions point toward Marketo:

  • Sales stays on Salesforce with no plan to move.
  • Your Marketo build holds automation you cannot rebuild this year.
  • A Marketo admin already runs the platform and the Salesforce sync.

A third path moves marketing to HubSpot and keeps sales on Salesforce through the native integration. HubSpot warns against running the Smart Transfer Salesforce transfer alongside that integration. The two tools match records on different identifiers, so running both creates duplicate records in HubSpot and Salesforce. Move the Marketo data through Smart Transfer and connect Salesforce through the integration alone.

Start with the Smart Transfer audit of your Marketo instance. Its record counts, field list and support flags show how much moves on its own and how much your team rebuilds by hand.

Common questions

What is HubSpot's biggest competitor?

HubSpot's main competitor depends on which part of the platform you compare. For marketing automation, HubSpot publishes a comparison page against Adobe Marketo Engage. For the CRM, HubSpot Smart Transfer supports moving Salesforce data into HubSpot.

Why are people leaving HubSpot?

No source we rely on measures why teams leave HubSpot. When a portal disappoints, our diagnostic checks the data model, properties, workflows, integrations, reporting and user adoption. We find where each problem starts, then fix the highest-impact issues first.

Can you migrate from Marketo to HubSpot?

Yes, HubSpot Smart Transfer supports Marketo as a source app. It moves contacts, email templates and users through a data sync, and it moves lists through a one-time transfer. Marketo automation has no mapping in Smart Transfer, so plan to rebuild your nurture logic in HubSpot workflows.

Let's scope it together.
